What this means
A “wage” is what you earn. The Bible says what sin earns is death: not only physical death, but separation from God and the judgment our sin deserves. This is not meant to crush you with despair; it is meant to tell the truth about the problem, so you do not look for a shallow cure.
Then the verse turns on two words: “but the gift.” Salvation is not a wage. It is not something you work off or pay back. Eternal life is God’s gift, and it is found through Jesus Christ our Lord. The focus is not on what you can do for God, but on what Christ has done for you.
A simple response
- Agree with God about sin and its seriousness.
- Receive the gift by faith, not by works.
- Come to Christ as Lord and Saviour.
