John 5:24 KJV

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

John 5:24 NKJV

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.

What this means

These are the Lord Jesus’ own words, and they are wonderfully clear. The one who hears His word and believes God who sent Him “hath everlasting life.” Eternal life is not presented as a future reward for the person who improves enough; it is a present possession for the one who believes.

He also says such a person “shall not come into condemnation.” That does not mean we never face difficulties, or that our lives become trouble free. It means that the question of judgment has been settled. The believer has “passed from death unto life” because Christ bore the judgment our sins deserved.

A simple response

  • Listen to what Christ says in His Word.
  • Believe God’s testimony about His Son.
  • Rest in Christ and thank God for a settled salvation.
