What this means
This verse tells you the heart of the Gospel: God’s love moved Him to give His Son. The Lord Jesus did not come because we deserved it, but because God loved. “Only begotten” speaks of the unique Son. No one else is who He is, and no one else could do what He did.
God’s offer is wide: “whosoever.” The response is simple: to “believe” is to trust Him, resting your soul on the Lord Jesus Christ, not on your own goodness, effort, or religion. God does not offer a better life for the already improved; He offers everlasting life to the one who comes as they are and believes on His Son.
A simple response
- Admit your need of God.
- Believe that Christ died for your sins and rose again.
- Trust Him personally.
